Description
Volunteer with Dwelling Place – Community Pop-Up Event
Join fellow GRCC students for a Day of Service with Dwelling Place of Grand Rapids! Help support residents in the Heartside neighborhood by assisting with a community pop-up store that provides free clothing and essential items in partnership with In The Image.
Dwelling Place is committed to improving lives by creating quality affordable housing, providing essential support services, and serving as a catalyst for neighborhood revitalization throughout Grand Rapids.
What You'll Be Doing
Participants will help:
- Set up and organize the community pop-up store.
- Assist residents as they shop for clothing and other free items.
- Organize merchandise and supplies throughout the event.
- Support Dwelling Place staff with customer service and event operations.
Your volunteer efforts will help provide residents with access to essential items and create a welcoming and supportive experience for members of the community.
Participant Expectations
- Dress in comfortable, casual clothing.
- Volunteers should expect activities such as standing for extended periods and lifting items under 20 pounds.
- Volunteers are expected to attend the entire volunteer shift.
- A post-event reflection is required following participation.
Before You Attend
- Please arrive by 12:00 p.m.
- Volunteers will receive a brief orientation (approximately 20 minutes) upon arrival.
- No additional paperwork is required before volunteering.
What's Provided
- All necessary supplies and equipment will be provided.
- Water, coffee, tea, and light snacks will be available for volunteers.

- Please check in at the front desk upon arrival.
- Street parking is available in front of and alongside the building.
Weather Policy
This volunteer opportunity takes place indoors and will continue as scheduled regardless of weather conditions.

Questions & Answers
- Do I need prior volunteer experience?
No! No prior experience is necessary. Dwelling Place staff will provide an orientation and volunteer instructions upon arrival.
- What should I wear?
Please wear comfortable, casual clothing appropriate for volunteering indoors.
- Will transportation be provided?
No. Students are responsible for arranging their own transportation to the volunteer site.
- Will food be provided?
Light refreshments, including water, coffee, tea, and snacks, will be provided for volunteers.
- Do I need to stay for the entire event?
Yes. Volunteers are expected to participate for the entire volunteer shift unless prior arrangements have been made.
- What kind of volunteer work will I be doing?
Volunteers will help organize and facilitate a community pop-up store by assisting with set-up, organizing donated items, and supporting residents as they shop for free clothing and essential items.
- Is there anything I need to complete before the event?
No. There are no additional forms or paperwork required before volunteering.
- Is there a requirement after the event?
Yes. GRCC Day of Service participants will be asked to complete a brief reflection following the event.
- How many volunteer hours will I receive?
Participants will receive approximately four volunteer hours for completing the full volunteer shift.
