Description
Volunteer with Critter Barn – Farm Volunteer Experience
Join fellow GRCC students for a Day of Service at Critter Barn in Zeeland! Spend the day giving back while supporting an organization dedicated to educating and inspiring people of all ages and abilities through hands-on agricultural experiences and the wonders of life on the farm.
What You'll Be Doing
Participants may assist with a variety of farm projects, including:
- Cleaning and organizing farm spaces
- Raking and outdoor maintenance
- Light construction projects
- Other farm-related tasks as needed
Farm work is never-ending, and your volunteer efforts will help Critter Barn continue providing meaningful educational experiences for the community.
Participant Expectations
- Closed-toe shoes and long pants are required.
- Wear clothes that can get dirty and dress appropriately for the weather.
- Participants should bring a water bottle, work gloves, sunscreen, a hat, and a rain jacket if needed.
- Volunteers should expect a variety of indoor and outdoor activities that may include standing, walking, lifting, bending, and kneeling.
- Volunteers are expected to attend the entire volunteer shift.
- A post-event reflection is required following participation.
Before You Attend
- Please arrive at the start of your registered volunteer shift (9:00 am - 1:00 pm)
- Volunteers will complete a farm waiver upon arrival.
- Participants must be at least 16 years old.
- Volunteers will be working around live animals in a farm setting and should be prepared to follow all staff instructions.
What's Provided
- Critter Barn staff will provide any necessary tools and supplies for volunteer activities.

- Check in at the Welcome Center (the front white hoop building).
- Free parking is available in the main parking area.
Weather Policy
If weather impacts outdoor activities, volunteer projects will be moved indoors whenever possible.
Space is limited, so register early to reserve your spot and make an impact in our community!

Questions & Answers
- Do I need prior volunteer experience?
No! No prior experience is necessary. Critter Barn staff will provide instructions and guidance for all volunteer activities.
- What should I wear?
Please wear closed-toe shoes, long pants, and clothes that can get dirty. Dress in layers and be prepared for both indoor and outdoor activities.
- Will transportation be provided?
No. Students are responsible for arranging their own transportation to the volunteer site.
- Will food be provided?
Snacks will be provided by group leader. Please bring a reusable water bottle and eat before arriving if needed.
- Do I need to stay for the entire event?
Yes. Volunteers are expected to participate for the entire volunteer shift unless prior arrangements have been made.
- What kind of volunteer work will I be doing?
Volunteer projects may include cleaning, raking, light construction work, and other tasks that help support Critter Barn's farm operations and educational programming.
- Is there anything I need to complete before the event?
Volunteers will complete a farm waiver upon arrival and should be prepared to work in a farm environment with live animals.
- Is there a requirement after the event?
Yes. GRCC Day of Service participants will be asked to complete a brief reflection survey following the event.
- How many volunteer hours will I receive?
Participants will receive approximately four volunteer hours for completing the full volunteer shift.
