Description
Volunteer with Gilda's Club Grand Rapids – Annual West Side Walk Support
Join fellow GRCC students for a Day of Service supporting Gilda's Club Grand Rapids and their Annual West Side Walk! This beloved community event raises awareness of the free emotional healthcare services Gilda's Club provides to individuals and families impacted by cancer and grief.
What You'll Be Doing
Participants will assist with various event-related activities, which may include:
- Volunteer registration and check-in
- Event set-up and tear down
- Supporting event operations and logistics
- Assisting staff and volunteers throughout the event
This is a great opportunity to gain experience working at a large community event while making a meaningful impact for individuals and families in West Michigan.
Participant Expectations
- Closed-toe shoes are required.
- Wear weather-appropriate clothing and dress in layers, as portions of the volunteer experience will take place outdoors.
- Students should bring a water bottle, sunscreen, and a hat if desired.
- Participants should expect to walk throughout the event and may be asked to lift items under 20 pounds, bend, or kneel as needed.
- Volunteers are expected to attend the entire volunteer shift.
- A post-event reflection is required following participation.
Before You Attend
- Volunteers should arrive at 8:00 a.m.
- Check in with the Volunteer Coordinator at the Volunteer Station upon arrival.
- Parking will be available nearby, and volunteers will be shuttled to the event location.
- Additional event-specific and emergency information will be shared with registered participants closer to the event date.
- Restrooms will be available on-site.
What's Provided
- All supplies and materials needed for the volunteer experience will be provided.
- Volunteers will receive a breakfast bar and bottled water during the event.

Questions & Answers
- Do I need prior volunteer experience?
No! No prior experience is necessary. Gilda's Club staff will provide any instructions needed when you arrive.
- What should I wear?
Please wear closed-toe shoes and weather-appropriate clothing. Dressing in layers is recommended since volunteer activities may take place both indoors and outdoors.
- Will transportation be provided?
No. Students are responsible for arranging their own transportation to the volunteer site.
- Will food be provided?
Yes! Volunteers will receive a breakfast bar and bottled water during the event.
- Do I need to stay for the entire event?
Yes. Volunteers are expected to participate for the entire volunteer shift.
- What kind of volunteer work will I be doing?
Volunteers will assist with event operations, including volunteer registration, event set-up and tear down, and supporting staff throughout Gilda's Club's Annual West Side Walk.
- Is there anything I need to complete before the event?
No additional paperwork is required at this time. Registered participants will receive any necessary event information closer to the volunteer date.
- Is there a requirement after the event?
Yes. GRCC Day of Service participants will be asked to complete a brief reflection following the event.
- How many volunteer hours will I receive?
Participants will receive approximately four volunteer hours for completing the full volunteer shift.
