Description
Volunteer with the Grand Rapids Children's Museum – Facilitate Play!
Join fellow GRCC students for a Day of Service at the Grand Rapids Children's Museum! Help create meaningful and playful experiences for children and families while supporting the museum's mission to build minds through play.
The Grand Rapids Children's Museum believes that play is essential for healthy development and has the power to transform individuals, families, and communities. Volunteers will play an important role in creating a welcoming and engaging environment for museum guests.
What You'll Be Doing
Participants may assist with:
- Maintaining and cleaning museum exhibits
- Facilitating a pop-up style program or craft activity for children and families
- Supporting museum staff with visitor engagement and program activities
This volunteer opportunity is perfect for students who enjoy working with children, being creative, and helping others have fun while learning.
Participant Expectations
- Closed-toe shoes are required.
- Wear comfortable clothing that allows you to move around easily.
- Clothing should not contain inappropriate images or language.
- Bring a reusable water bottle.
- Volunteers should expect indoor activities that may include standing, walking, bending, and kneeling.
- Volunteers are expected to attend the entire volunteer shift.
- A post-event reflection is required following participation.
Before You Attend
- Please arrive by 8:50 a.m.
- Check in at the front desk, pick up your name tag and apron, and wait in the lobby for the rest of the group to arrive.
- Volunteers will participate in a museum tour (approximately 30 minutes) followed by a brief overview of volunteer responsibilities.
- A volunteer application will need to be completed prior to participating.
- Participants must be at least 14 years old.
What's Provided
- Craft materials and volunteer supplies will be provided by museum staff.
- Complimentary bottled water will be available for volunteers.

- Do I need prior volunteer experience?
No! No prior experience is necessary. The museum is looking for friendly, welcoming volunteers who enjoy working with children and families.
- What should I wear?
Please wear closed-toe shoes and comfortable clothing that allows you to move around easily. Clothing should not contain inappropriate images or language.
- Will transportation be provided?
No. Students are responsible for arranging their own transportation to and from the volunteer site.
- Will food be provided?
Group leader will have snacks. Please bring a reusable water bottle and eat before arriving if needed.

Yes. Participants are expected to attend the full volunteer shift unless prior arrangements have been made.
- What kind of volunteer work will I be doing?
